[The History of Bukchon]
Bukchon(The North Village) is located among Gyeongbokgung(Gyeongbok Palace), Changdeokgung(Changdeok Palace)
and Jongmyo(the Royal Ancestral Shrine)
and one of traditional residential areas.
This area is situated among the royal palaces placed on the basis of Sung
Confucianism of Joseon which shows the Joseon Dynasty views of nature
and the world there is a group of Korean traditional houses
close to between two giant royal palaces with beautiful natural scenery
in the background.
It still remains numerous branch like alleyways,
dramatically showing a view of the historic city of 600 years.
This area consisting of Wonseo-dong, Jae-dong, Gye-dong, Gahoe-dong
and the like has been called 'Bukchon(North Village)'
from originated the name as an upper village of Cheong-gye-cheon

characteristics of hanoks in Bukchon
Hanoks in Bukchon, which are called "reformed hanoks" since they are equipped with glass gates in daecheong (wooden-floored hall), have been equipped with new materials, such as shades of galvanized steel sheets on the eaves.
There are two chief characteristics of hanoks in Bukchon:
they employ the "evolved structuring method" and emphasis
"the trend of decorative work."
They do not have complete elegance since they have low mulmaes
(the slope of the roof), guldoris (round beams)
and gyeopcheomas (double eaves),
and many partitions in the narrow space between pillars.

Bukchon during the Joseon Dynasty : The Village of High Cricles
The village was the heart of Hanyang (Seoul’s former name) between
Gyeongbokgung (Palace) and Changdeokgung(Palace), and it was,
and still is, located on the south side of the mountains,
stretching from Bugak to Eungbong.
According to a census in 1906, 43.6 percent of the 10,241 in Bukchon
were from noble families or high-ranking officials.
From this, we can see that upper class gathered in Bukchon at that time.
Over the stone wall, you can see the palace.

The street runs along the wall.
There are different kinds of workshops, such as the Institute
of Korean Royal Cuisine and Baek Hongbeom's House in Wonseo-dong,
which traces the history of the people who served the royal family in the past.
As the construction restrictions on this area were lifted,
many hanoks were destroyed because of multiple housing buildings.
At the end of street, there are many exhibition places like
traditional workshops and the Institute of Korean Royal Cuisine.
Passing the Institute into a blind alley on the west side of Changdeokgung(Palace),
you come across a place used by women to do laundry and also to relax.

The Clothes-washing Site (beside the wall of New Seonwonjeon)
Walking along the west wall of Changdeokgung(Palace), you come across a stream.
This place meets the wall of New Seonwonjeon and it is said that people did laundry with the water from the palace.
The women in the palace washed their faces or
clothes with rice bran and the powder of mug beans or red beans.
So the water from the palace had unclear color but it was good for laundry
so people gathered and did laundry to use that water.
That is why the place became a wash place.

A place where contemporary society and tradition coexist
In the 2000s, Bukchon transformed into a place where contemporary society
and tradition coexist.
During this time, people added modern architectural elements
to the traditional hanoks in Bukchon.
Moreover, people started new kinds of businesses such as cafeterias,
restaurants, boutiques and galleries in hanoks.
Moreover, Bukchon is favorite spot in Seoul for youth; indeed,
it is common to see young couples on dates in hanok-style restaurants.
