Jeongdong-gil & Deoksugung

Deoksugung Palace is unique among Korean palaces in having a modern seal engraving and a western style garden and fountain.

The Changing of the Royal Guard can be seen in front of Daehanmun(Gate) and is a very popular event for many visitors.
During the Joseon Dynasty, the royal guard was responsible for opening and closing the palace gate as well as patrolling around the gate area.

Outside the palace is a picturesque road flanked by a stone wall which is much loved by visitors.

The road from the main gate of Deoksugung Palace leading to Jeongdong-gil (Chongdong-gil) is prized for its picturesque beauty.

The palace wall and the road together create a beautiful atmosphere.

An old saying is that you will break up with your partner if you walk along this road together. This saying comes from the presence of a divorce court nearby.

Chungdong First Methodist Church

Chungdong church was the first church chapel in Korea.
The construction was started in 1895 and completed in October, 1897.

Originally, this church was founded by H.G.Appenzeller, the first Methodist missionary to Korea.
At first, the service was held at a Korean traditional style house, which was called "Bethel Chapel", but as the number of Methodists increased, a masonry chapel was built.

Chungdong church has been remodeled several times, but the original appearance has been well preserved.
The church was designed and constructed by Yoshijawa, a Japanese architect, and Sim Uiseok.

It is a single story building that is made of red bricks and has a truss ceiling frame over wood columns.
Its interior, following the three-bay structure, is divided into three sections by flanking columns.
There is a cross-shaped mansard and a three story high bell tower in the southern corner.
Although the inside is a flat mansard, the outside is modeled after the countrified Gothic style of the Victoria era.
Such features include pointed arches, circular windows, inner erected decorations, and detailed tracery.

Currently, the church consists of this building and an new building recently built.
